Tell me about their technology.
ConnectDER (pronounced “connector”) is a UL-listed utility equipment that turns the electric power meter socket on a customer’s home into a standardized interconnection point for solar PV and other distributed energy resources (DERs). The standardized interconnection point provides PV installers and homeowners a safe, consistent, and lower-cost alternative to traditional wiring methods. Metering, communications, and micro-processing inside the ConnectDER provide the utility with asset management capabilities to facilitate integration with the grid. In short, the ConnectDER gives the solar PV industry an incentive to install a local grid asset manager at the home as part of every PV project, thereby creating a genuine win-win opportunity for all stakeholders.
What should I know about their EEx Demonstration Project?
ConnectDER will deploy their devices to residential PV systems on one utility feeder line. We introduced ConnectDER to PV installers to help reduce PV system installation time and cost for installers; and utilities to help integrate with smart meters, provide grid stabilization capabilities, and measure the avoided cost of distribution system upgrades and other impacts on the system.
